Derby Day Style Guide #1: We love ASOS

Since its inception, racedays featuring a traditional ‘Derby’ horse race have typically encouraged a black & white dress code on course.

Auckland Cup Week is just around the corner and with it comes Vodafone Derby Day on March 4.

Champion racehorse Black Caviar gets all Derby on it on the cover of what was an iconic edition of Vogue magazine.

Like many of its international counterparts, Vodafone Derby Day at Ellerslie certainly encourages (but doesn’t enforce!) a monochrome dress code.  However, just because the colour palette may feel limited, you can see by the array of styles on the fashions in the field runway each year that it needn’t stop your imagination!

If you’re keen to follow tradition & dress up to the day’s unwritten ‘style code’, we suggest taking a look at Vogue’s picks on the best street style at AAMI Victoria Derby Day (Nov 2016) style or doing a quick Google search on that day’s fashions in the fields event for some outfit inspiration.  We love how the Aussies do it!

Alternatively, if you’d prefer someone else does the thinking for you, over the next wee while we’re going to be rounding up some effortless Derby Day looks that anyone can rock on course.

In this first edition, we’re selected some fun, affordable styles from online retailer ASOS.

With free shipping that generally takes no more than 10 days to reach your door, you’ve still got plenty of time to click ‘buy now’ & be sorted for Ellerslie’s big event.

Mono Ruffle Dress by ASOS – NZ $158.50 (free shipping worldwide)

This slim-fitted halterneck dress with kick-back split is a fun option for those wanting to look on-trend (cold shoulder, anyone?) but stay in keeping with the general rules of race attire.

Channel your inner Jennifer Hawkins by teaming this one with a simple crown or headband, and you’ll be talking Derby all day long.  Buy it now.

Deep V Pleated Dress by ASOS – NZ $126.80 (free shipping worldwide)

Confession time… we’re guilty of previously stating that racewear is anti-plunging necklines, and for the most part, we agree with that. But this dress with its flattering empire line and classic midi-length could probably be forgiven for breaking such a rule, given how gorgeous it is – in fact, despite its ‘deep valleys’, we’d go so far as to say it’s a rather demure wee number.

Keep your make-up & accessories simple, pair the outfit with a classic headpiece and, while it won’t be your next fashions in the field winning outfit, it should certainly be one of your race day favourites. Take it home today.

Premium Lace Dress With Laddering Detail by True Decadence – NZ$207.10 (free shipping worldwide)

While the Auckland summer is still very much alive & kicking come early March, Vodafone Derby Day is technically held in autumn – a season where the days can be cooler, and seasonal race wear guidelines would suggest a sleeve is an appropriate choice.

Designed by trend-led label True Decadence which is inspired by what is seen on the catwalk, you can be assured you’ll be rocking the latest in seasonal style with this gorgeous midi, despite the fact you may feel rather ‘covered up’.

We personally love the detailing on this dress and would even suggest including the smallest pop of colour via (simple!) accessories to ensure you’re a stand out filly on 4 March.  Click to add to your wardrobe.

We’ll be publishing another edition of our Derby Day Style Guide next Tuesday afternoon (7 February) so either make a note to check back then, or follow us & be automatically alerted when we’ve got news to share.
